MANAGING HEARTS DAY

Six ideas for Valentine's Day if you are a young professional who is solo on February 14th.

You don't have a love thing for Valentine's Day? Who's judging? It's one Hallmark Channel holiday that you are not attached to someone else. Let it go. Even though it might seem like it, you are not the only one who doesn't celebrate or doesn't want to celebrate V-Day. Being alone is not so bad. I get my best dreaming and creativity done by myself sometimes. It's all in how you look at the situation. A recent poll shows only about 48% of people celebrate V-Day, anyway.

Make your own happiness. Feeling complete comes from within. The great thing about life is that you are the ultimate decision maker for yourself. The people you allow in your life are privileged to be in your world. Make no mistake, it IS a plus to have a companion but not always necessary.

Why get yourself feeling blue about a day that has been commercialized? You can make yourself feel like a king or queen without anyone else and on ANY day of the year.

If you are looking for fun and making your own Valentine's Day this year, which I think is kinda epic, there are cool ways to make it happen.

Here's a few ideas for a young professional to consider:

1. Book a class that you've been putting off. Sign up for an ax throwing for singles or a Valentine's yoga class or a float spa session.

2. In the spirit of this year's self-Valentine, pay for the coffee for the next two people on the check-out line. Enjoy how it paying it forward makes you feel.

3. Keeping your heart healthy is a good way to show yourself some love. I recently bought a pair of Merrill hiking shoes and I love them. They make me want to find the nearest trail. Try an after work hike in nature and stay active.

4. Buy a silky set of sheets to sleep on for Valentine's night. Long-term, satin sheets are said to keep a guy/girls skin looking wrinkle free. Pick up a to-go order on Valentine's night and binge-watch a new show in your new sheets.

5. If you are feeling like you really don't want to be alone on Thursday, take your sibling out for dinner or bring a spontaneous bag of sweet treats to the parents house.

6. One last idea for a do-it-yourself Valentine is to dip fruit or potato chips in chocolate. As someone who adores using her creativity in the kitchen, this one appeals to me the most. Below is a quick recipe. Please, send me some. I'm hungry!

1/2 cup coconut oil

6 Tbsp cacao powder

3 Tbsp maple syrup

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

6 drops stevia, or other natural sweetener

1 pinch of pink Himalayan salt

1/4 cup canned coconut milk (full-fat), at room temperature

1 pinch-ish of cinnamon or orange zest or cayenne. Whatever you like to add a yummy flavor to the chocolate coating.

~Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

~In a small pot, melt the coconut oil over medium-low heat. Whisk in the rest of the ingredients except coconut milk. Whisk until smooth.

Remove from heat and whisk in coconut milk.

~If the sauce separates or seems too thin, add a bit more coconut milk and whisk again.

~Dip the fruit or potato chips or whatever you like in chocolate sauce and place on the baking sheet.

~Refrigerate until the chocolate hardens.

Have a blast being your own Valentine and making the day special.
